Thursday 9/19/2013 - Churchill War Rooms and Shopping

Hey All (If anyone is out there???)

We've been so busy lately we have not had time to sit down and Blog! Our apologies and here's to you...

Thursday 19/9/2013 was a rainy day, so we decided that it would be a good day for shopping and other short trips while it was not too wet. We headed out to Harrods and Oxford Circus. What's not to like about Harrods? Everyone of course was very helpful and I found everything that I had scouted on the internet site that I wanted to purchase, and that's called timely shopping. I did manage to stop at the Guerlain counter and picked up a Harrods exclusive Shalimar perfume.... Just a little difference but nice scent.

After Harrods, since we were close, we tool a stop at 221-B Baker Street, for the Sherlock Holmes museum. There is a gift shop here also with a few items for Sherlock followers. Carmilla gave us the inside scoop that most visitors have no clue of. The museum and shop building which has listed 221-B baker street over the door is NOT the actual address of that location. It was made up just to satisfy Sherlock followers. The actual 221-B address is about two blocks down the road, and it is a bank.
Shhhhh, don't tell anybody... :-)

Then off to Clark's shoes  because my feet are killing me :( We have been running around so much that my old Steve Maddens were killing my feet, so Clark's seemed like a reasonable thing to do.

Wait a minute, is this really Clark's? The shoes are fabulous! Not the old lady line we see at the USA stores :( I've bypassed Clark's so long because they were, well, just sooooo ugly and these shoes are not! I found some great boots and flats, but one pair of the boots were not available in my size there. Don't just love it when you come to a foreign country and your size is smaller than at home - it rocks! Five and one half please :)

We stopped for lunch at Leons, which is a health food/fast food. All Fair Trade, organic and very nice. We enjoyed it. http://www.leonrestaurants.co.uk

After all this we made a quick stop back at base, then decided to go to the Churchill War Rooms and Museum.  http://www.iwm.org.uk/visits/churchill-war-rooms

We spent so much time in the War Rooms, we only had about an hour to go through the Churchill Museum. We were so disappointed as the Museum is really fantastic, and really deserved more time than the actual War Rooms. Lesson learned and another reason to come back :)

We texted Carmilla and met at Selfridges Department store. I had to go there as it was started by an American, and Masterpiece Theatre had done a wonderful series with Jeremy Piven as Selfridge.

We had drinks at one of the Cafes and then decided to head off for dinner in Shorditch. We stopped at the Viet Grill, had some wonderful Pho and a couple of Saigon beers. Highly recommend :)

After dinner we waddled back to the Hoxton Tube, and tubed back to base. We were up till 01:30, and we didn't see any pumpkins sprout.

The trip has been wonderful all around except for our base. More to come on that after our CC company takes care of this....

Wall in the Baker Street Tube station

Guess where this is...

The actual table where Churchill held his staff meetings. The wooden chair at the far end of the table was his seat. The air was full of smoke and tempers frequently flared. Must have been a fascinating place to be a fly on the wall.

Alarm signals for the Cabinet War Rooms.
Notice the bottom one is for ground attack. It was a real possibility and they were concerned about it.

The Chief of Staff conference table.

Read this. It is interesting.

This describes how they built the bunker underneath an existing building.

An actual undamaged enigma machine. This is the second one we have seen We saw a semi-destroyed one in the Berlin bunkers, but this one is immaculate.

Selfridges!
